This handout provides a simple definition and framework for understanding distributed leadership based upon our research to date. This single-page handout can be helpful for starting conversations among leaders within your organization and exploring some of the foundational practices for building distributed leadership.


Open Mind Consulting completed interviews with three Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) member organizations in the fall of 2024 to explore practices of distributed leadership that elevate the work of early- and mid-career leaders. This document builds upon the APAP NYC presentation highlights, going deeper into case study findings, to provide more insights on practices, cultural attributes and actions that actively develop and support distribute leadership.
